DRY SKIN BRUSHING

The best remedies to keep fit are sometimes the simplest. And nothing can be simpler than the technique of dry skin brushing, which is now gaining popularity. It is one of the best ways to stimulate body circulation and to eliminate toxic wastes that build up in the lymphatic system.

The human body has a number of ways of eliminating the waste matter it generates.  Sweating
is one of the most effective means at its disposal to rid itself of toxic wastes. The skin – the largest body organ – is the primary area through which the sweating-cum-elimination process is conducted; the skin is also the route through which beneficial elements like sunlight are drawn into the body. But in order for the skin to perform these jobs efficiently it needs to have a clean surface and unclogged pores. And, the best way to maintain an absolutely clean skin surface is through dry skin brushing.

But what is the modus operandi?

The method is similar to a basic massage except the strokes are applied with a brush. The entire body is brushed down vigorously with firm smooth strokes applied in a specific direction. Brushing strokes should always be applied towards the heart. It is best to progress methodically, starting with the feet (pay attention to the soles where many of the nerve endings are accessible). Then progress up the calves, thighs, buttocks and back with long smooth strokes. A couple of strokes in each area is sufficient. The stomach and chest areas should be brushed with circular strokes. The hands and arms come last.

Brushing is best done on dry skin, prior to bathing. This way the dead skin cells and debris pried loose by the brushing process are washed off by the bath.

The best implement for the purpose is a natural loofah or a glove made of an abrasive, natural fibre. A long-handled brush with natural bristles can also be used. Don't be scared of using something rough on your skin (except the face); your skin will grow to love the daily ritual and actually crave it.

Remember the benefits are enormous as all body systems will improve. While it removes layers of dead skin tissue, it will tauten your skin texture and allow new cells to grow, thus renewing your entire skin surface. Because the lymph system eliminates toxic metabolic waste, cellulite affected tissue will loose its dimpled look as the toxins are removed. As the massage-like strokes stimulate blood circulation and the elimination of metabolic waste matter the general health of the body will also show improvment.

Try to work dry skin brushing into your daily bath regimen to experience its benefits in full measure.
