Ayurvedic practitioners in India have used honey for nearly 5,000 years.

Ayurveda is a holistic health system that evolved in ancient India. The term combines two Sanskrit words to mean “knowledge of life.” It’s the oldest system of medicine in the world. And it is still practiced widely in India, where the government recognizes it.

In the South Indian state of Kerala, he visited the original Ayurmana or “ancient healing house”, and watched the Ayurvedic masters use honey for nearly every skin treatment they created.

They mixed it with other natural ingredients like lemon, milk, rice and fruit juices to lighten freckles, cure skin rashes and acne, and remove wrinkles. Even Ayurvedic facial scrubs for everyday use have honey in them.

Honey, milk and oatmeal mixtures were also commonly used as facial beauty scrubs in ancient Egypt.

Dr Sears says even modern medicine is beginning to recognize honey’s benefits.

It is used mostly to heal wounds from burns and cuts, especially in New Zealand and Australia.

Scientists theorize honey helps skin because it encourages your skin to make hyaluronic acid (HA). HA fills out your skin because it absorbs 3,000 times its weight of water. At the same time, honey prevents the stringy kind of collagen that creates scar tissue from building up.

Instead, it forms a different type. A delicate, mesh-like collagen structure that can bring your skin’s surface back to normal and allow it to heal.

You can also use honey for other skin problems like diaper rash, haemorrhoids, psoriasis, eczema and dandruff.

And it’s antibacterial, too.

Honey works well against bacteria for two reasons. The first is that its sugars bind to water molecules and deny bacteria the moisture they need to grow.

The second is a secret ingredient added by bees. It’s an enzyme called glucose oxidase. Researchers think it stops bacteria effectively because it helps you produce hydrogen peroxide, a natural disinfectant.

Honey is deadly to the so-called “superbug” bacteria that cause hospital infections. A study took bacteria strains resistant to antibiotics and exposed them to dilutions of honey. Formulas of only 40 percent honey killed ALL the harmful bacteria.

Even the newest bacterial threat, gram-negative bacteria, can’t stand up to honey. The researchers used only a 30 percent dilution on the five known gram-negative strains and killed all of those, too.

And now plastic surgeons use honey to fix skin grafts in place and prevent complications, such as graft loss, infection and graft rejection.

Another reason honey is so good for your skin may be that it’s also an antioxidant.

Antioxidants protect skin from UV radiation damage, and aid in skin rejuvenation.

Darker honeys have high ORAC values. The ORAC scale was designed to help compare the antioxidant power of different foods. The higher the ORAC value of a food, the more power it has to stop free-radical damage and help fight off health problems.

Different kinds of grapes, for example, can have ORAC values of up to 1,200. But a study at the University of Illinois found that some of the darker honeys can measure as high as 1,630 on the ORAC scale, giving your skin’s health a big boost.

Scientists are even developing new alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) skin treatments from honey.

These acids from fruits and plants work with the slight acidity of your skin to help exfoliate it naturally. AHA helps remove old skin cells by dissolving the fatty deposits that hold them in place, which allows new healthy skin to emerge.

With all the ways your skin can benefit from honey, it’s a good idea to keep some in your house.

Dr Sears keeps a jar of raw, organic Manuka honey from New Zealand in his pantry, but any of the darker honeys are good for skin care.

If you get a cut or a scrape, you can follow these steps:

  • apply honey directly to the wound;
  • cover the wound with a bandage or dressing;
  • change the dressing and add more honey as necessary because the honey will diffuse into the wound;
  • change the bandage if it sticks to the wound instead of the honey.

To make an Ayurvedic exfoliant for your skin using honey, mix:

  • Two tablespoons of rice powder (or amla powder, if you can find it)
  • One tablespoon of milk (for dry skin, use plain yogurt instead)
  • Five drops of lemon juice (for oily skin)
  • One teaspoon of honey
  • One half teaspoon of sugar

Stir this mixture into a paste, apply it to your skin and leave on for up to 10 minutes. Rinse with fresh, clean water.

New study links Vitamin D deficiency to asthma & COPD

A mouse study out of Australia has provided the first concrete evidence of a link between vitamin D deficiency and decreased lung function. In fact, this study shows that vitamin D deficiency actually alters the very structure of the lungs, resulting in lower lung volume.

Although this was a mouse study, it follows right along with previous human studies showing a link between vitamin D deficiency and the severity of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD, one of the most common lung diseases, makes it difficult to breathe. This particular study was able to show a direct causal link between vitamin D deficiency and lung function. The results raised concerns about the increased prevalence of vitamin D deficiency.

Equally concerning is the misguided, way too low, vitamin D recommendations from the Institute of Medicine (see the February 2011 issue of Nutrition & Healing for Dr. Wright’s take on the IOM’s conclusions).

A new assay hitting Europe is able to determine early vitamin D deficiency by measuring blood levels of 25-hydroxy (25-OH) vitamin D. What’s so special about that? Vitamin D testing is known for being pretty inaccurate. Testing 25-OH vitamin D is the most accurate type of vitamin D test. Tech company Abbott, which developed the assay, says this means more opportunities for preventative and therapeutic action.

In the meantime, Dr. Wright has previously stated that sunlight is the very best source of vitamin D (the rays start a chain of reaction within the human body that results in the production of vitamin D). Of course, he also says that many don’t get enough sun these days, so supplementation is key. And, it’s Vitamin D3 that is essential.

Both Dr Wright and Dr Al Sears recommend 4,000 International Units of Vitamin D3 daily for adults and teens, 1,000 IU for infants and small children, and 2,000 IU for everyone in between. Of course, it’s always best to consult with a doctor skilled in natural medicine in determining proper supplement dosage.

Eliminate wrinkles - very powerful technique

You must have seen people with deep grooves in their faces, and promised yourself that you’d never let your face look like a dried-up prune. Fortunately, we do have some control over the changing texture of our skin as it ages, even though we may not be able to completely put off the wrinkles and expression lines as they develop.

This involves applying fish oil directly to your wrinkles. This makes sense to us, as we all know that fish, especially those that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, are great for the heart as well as the brain. So why not for the skin too? However a word of caution, take care while applying near the eyes that none of it gets in the eye. Leave the fish oil on for about 20 minutes, then wash off the excess. Lastly, don’t apply any face cream or makeup on the area for at least 30 minutes or so.

Back pain & hip-flexor muscles

Do you suffer from back pain? Chances are you do, even if only an irritating ‘heaviness’ around the lower back which occurs too consistently to ignore. Back pain has nothing to do with your age; more likely it has something to do with the number of hours you spend sitting on your behind. All the hours sitting behind your desk, in your car and in front of the television, may not seem long, but they can add up to six to eight hours a day in the seated position.

The bad news is that your body wasn’t designed to spend so much time sitting down. Long periods of sitting, exert enormous pressure on your hip flexors, and can be a major cause of lower-back pain.

Your hip-flexor muscles are the muscles at the front of your hips and pelvis. Stretching your hip-flexors several times a week can help prevent back pain. Here’s a simple stretch for the hip flexor muscles:

  • Start by standing up straight with both feet flat on the floor. Put your hands on your hips and keep your back and hips in alignment
  • Place your right foot forward, maintaining the same straight alignment
  • Push your hips forward, without actually bending the knees, while maintaining your erect posture. Push your hips forward slowly until you feel tension in the muscles on the front of your left hip. Hold till the count of 10
  • Repeat the sequence on the other side by reversing legs - putting your left foot forward to create tension in your right hip-flexors.

Simple, isn’t it? This is just one exercise that works to stretch the hip-flexors, but some people can do with a little extra help. It’s important to remember that back pain is often an issue with muscles and bones that aren’t in your back. Time and lack of use shorten your muscle fibers making them more and more inflexible, pulling your bones out of alignment. Shortening of muscles in the legs, hips and torso causes build up of excessive pressure on nerves and tissues in the human skeletal system. One of the most affected areas is the back. Household chores help you remain young & healthy

Try doing as many household chores as you possibly can to remain healthy, flexible and young.

Making beds, mopping the kitchen floor, cleaning the loo, scrubbing down the bath, vacuuming cat hair off the couch – these are the everyday chores that we tend to whinge and whine about. Stop right now! These are the very actions that could add years to your life and keep your joints flexible, apart from forcing some movement into sedentary lives. The average person can burn over 250 calories in an hour of medium intensity household tasks such as these. Manually washing clothes, dishes or utensils will tone up your arms; kneading dough exercises your wrists and fingers and will keep them flexible; reaching for items stored on the top shelves makes you stretch your muscles and improve balance.

And if you would like to do a little bit more for your health than depend only on everyday household chores we suggest that you try the Tibetan rejuvenation yoga exercises – 30 minutes a day of low intensity yoga which you practice at your own pace and at the level you feel comfortable with.

Macular Degeneration & Vitamin B

One of our greatest fears as we get older is about the condition of the eyes. How long can we sustain our vision?

Few treatments exist for a condition that is likely to affect as many as 10 million plus seniors in North America – age-related macular degeneration. And, even more worrying is the fact that such treatment is available only for the advanced forms of the condition.

Under the circumstances, some hope for prevention of onset of macular degeneration is offered by the results of a study funded by the National Eye Institute. One of the findings of this study is that high blood levels of the amino acid, homocysteine, may contribute to age-related macular degeneration. In addition, the report also mentions the possible benefit from taking folic acid, vitamins B-6 and B-12. These vitamins are known to reduce blood levels of homocysteine.

Most reports are circumspect when reporting their findings and far from free with their recommendations. But reading between the lines one can safely deduce (without being Sherlock Holmes) that upping your daily dose of Vitamin B complex may be one route to putting off the onset of macular degeneration as long as possible.

Of all the senses, eyesight is one of the most precious – do everything possible to ensure better vision naturally, as long as is possible.

Good deal… here’s 5 tips that will help you along…

TIP 1

Ditch The Starch

Starches, such as rice, potatoes, some root vegetables, oats, etc. are often considered “health foods.”

While they can be healthy, they can also pack on stomach bodyfat if you eat too much of them.

As you may know, my “Every Other Day Diet” System (EODD) actually encourages you to eat starches, and even sweets,

several days a week TO GET RID of excess weight.

Weight Loss

(Some of you may see a survey here on how best to help with your bodyweight goals)

Well… how does THAT work?

Simple:  Timing is everything.

And we take a “weekly” approach to foods rather than a “daily approach”. This keeps your metabolism guessing. If

your body cannot figure out what you’re up to, fatburning is that much more powerful. And you can get by with

eating starches… at least at specific times on specific days.

But if you’re not going to do EODD, then you’ll have to wing it. And the best way to wing it is to simply cut

starches out entirely for 4 to 8 weeks. Then slowly add them back a few days per week.

This is nowhere near as effective (or as fun) as the EODD method, but it will get you pointed in the right

direction.

TIP 2

Can The Sodas

This one is really hard for me. I’ve been hooked on diet-soda on and off for years. When I go to get into top shape

(like I am now) I have to get rid of the diet-sodas… yes, DIET-sodas. Need I say “real” sodas too? They are

loaded with sugar.

Why diet-sodas? A recent study revealed that people who drank diet-sodas actually increased bodyfat when compared

to those who drank sugar-sodas. What the… ??

Yep. Your body cannot be fooled by aspartame and chemicals. Sorry, but that’s the truth.

Here’s a personal story:  When I cut out the diet-sodas, my bodyfat drops like a rock in a pond of clear water.

And that’s what you need to be drinking:  A quart of pure water per 50 lbs of bodyweight a day.

I mix it with lemon and a bit of Stevia (an herbal sweetener) and make lemonade. It’s wonderful!

TIP 3

Stay Hungry

Arnold’s first movie was “Stay Hungry” (well, after “Pumping Iron” that is). You cannot rest on your butt and stay

hungry. You cannot think you’ve “arrived” and stay hungry.

It takes a special person to be hungry… and an even greater one to stay that way.

I want you to stay hungry in two ways:  In how you workout and literally… stay a bit hungry before you go to bed.

Not “starving”… just a bit hungry.

For your workouts, I have a great solution. If you pick up EODD you’ll get a limited shot at “7 Minute Body”… my

combination of “7 Minute Muscle” and “The 7 Minute In-Home Workout” in one book… and for more than half off…

but that’s a very limited deal. Gotta have EODD… you’ll need them both…

Lose Weight

You see, progression — “forced” progression — is the best way to stay hungry. 7 Minute Body forces you to

progress without thinking about it. Progression is built into the System.

As for as staying hungry at night? Check with your doctor and if he/she okays it, take 500mg of potassium and

1000mg of magnesium/calcium a few hours prior to bed. This helps with the hunger pangs. Also, keep hard-boiled eggs

in the fridge. If you get really hungry, eat one with half the yolk (toss the other half) It keeps me full for an

hour at least.

TIP 4

Cardio Clarity

Hours and hours of cardio a day is not the answer. However, you can do “light” cardio (i.e. brisk walking, or

riding the bike at 60% of your max) just to burn off calories. That’s okay… and personally I don’t find it that

boring if I’m watching a TV show. It does not interfere with my main fatloss exercise (weight training… YES!) and

it burns off about 400 calories an hour.

What does work is early morning fasting cardio… but you only need 9-15 minutes. I explain the GXP Protocol

(Modified) in the 7 Minute Body book, available only if you pick up EODD, and you can get it at more than half off.

TIP 5

Get Raw At Night

Raw veggies with your last meal and as a snack will really help your fatburning along. I started with red peppers

because they’re sweet. Now I eat virtually every veggie raw at night without thinking about it. Give this a shot.

The fatloss is well worth it.

Sprouts - the nutritional powerhouse

A balanced diet, with accent on the nutritional properties of the foods you eat, is an essential keep-healthy measure. It’s not enough to ensure that all food groups are included, you must also make sure that your daily menu ensures your body gets adequate doses of all the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients it needs to keep it functioning at optimal level.

If you follow some well thought out guidelines for healthy eating your body will never starve, should you even decide to go on a drastic diet to lose weight or detox.

* Always keep a supply of nutrition-packed foods in your refrigerator at all times

* Do not skip meals. Eat smaller quantities to lose weight, but never skip a meal altogether

* Eat five or six small meals during the day instead of three large ones. An apple, a few almonds, a stick of celery or a cup of sprouts, all count towards a small meal and deliver low-calorie nutrition

* Have your first meal within an hour of waking to kick start your metabolism

* Have a glass of water first thing when you awake

* Eat a variety of foods from all food groups

* Include both cooked and raw foods; a ‘living food’ such as sprouts, is a nutritional power house

* Ensure that you have daily intake of adequate levels of calories, proteins and nutrients

* Sipping water between meals keeps you hydrated and away from snacking on high-calorie junk

* Eat ‘living foods’ like germinated sprouts to get a really concentrated dose of nutrients daily

Research data backs up the claims of countless nutritionists and living foods experts who support the dietary merits of germinated nuts and seeds. However, all nuts and seeds should be soaked for at least 12 hours to start the germination process. The period of germination is when all the vitamins, minerals, proteins and essential fatty acids (EFAs) component in nuts and seeds begin to activate and multiply.

It follows that the healthiest sprouts are the ones you germinate yourself, as the ones from the super- market may be well be past the date they would qualify as “living food”. It’s quite simple if you follow a few basic steps.

Sprouting 101:

* Soaking: Different seeds require different periods of soaking. A soak of at least twelve hours is required to ‘activate’ the seed. The mung beans we sprout require 12 hours of soaking

* Rinsing: Water is a key ingredient in the process of sprouting and de-hulling

* Draining: Drain sprouts thoroughly after rinsing. Water-logging leads to crop failure

* Air Circulation: Keep the air circulating around the germinating sprouts; use a sprout-maker

* Greening: Not all sprouts need to be greened. All sprouts are packed with flavor and nutrition

* Cleanliness: This is uncooked food - so ensure that both seeds and sprouting device are clean

* Storage: Sprouts will keep for up to 6 weeks in your refrigerator packed in an air-tight container. Never refrigerate wet sprouts

* Fresher is better, so start off the growing cycle more frequently for continuous supply

The only downside to having ‘living sprouts’ on your menu on a daily basis is to keep a continuous supply growing - if only they would sprout quicker! Benefits of Dry Skin Brushing

Daily dry skin brushing is said to be one of the best ways to keep the body circulation going and to eliminate toxic wastes from the system.
