How to do a breast self exam

An extremely lucid guide on how to conduct a breast self exam caught our eye as we waited at the AMRI Hospitals’ visitors’ lounge. We are sharing this invaluable information with our readers, giving due credit to the source, i.e AMRI Hospitals, Kolkata.

Preparing for the breast self exam:
* To be conducted once a month on a fixed day of the month (if of non menstrual age), or  a few days after menstrual cycle.
*  Examination should be done very soon after a bath

Conducting the visual breast self exam:
* Remove all clothing from the chest area
* Stand in front of mirror
* Look for changes in breast  skin texture: any puckering, dimpling, or change in size, shape, symmetry, skin discoloration, bumps, sores, scaly skin?
* Check the nipples: are they turned in (inverted)? Is there any discharge?
* Examine the breasts, as above, with both hands placed on hips.
* Inspect them again with arms raised overhead.

Conducting the manual/tactile breast self exam:
* Lie on a flat surface & place a pillow under your left shoulder. Place the left hand behind your head. This posture is suitable for examination of the left breast with your right hand. The position of the pillow and hand must be reversed for examination of the right breast with your left hand.
* Place your hand at the very top of your breast, near the collarbone.
* Mentally divide the breast into 8 segments (like spokes of a wheel, converging at the nipple)
* Apply firm pressure using the pads of the middle three fingers on each segment of the breast. The pressure can move from the top of the breast segment to the nipple or rotate around the nipple.
* Conduct the pressure test on each breast in turn.
* Examine the upper chest area above the breasts
* Examine the arm pits while sitting or standing with the arm partially raised
* Examine the nipples and look for discharge by positioning the fingers above and below the nipple, then on both sides, to distend the area around the nipples for easier viewing

Breast cancer is a killer. Conduct this self exam once a month to make sure you catch it at the earliest stage, when it is curable.

Honey therapy for facial skin texture

Many practitioners of natural healing all over the world use honey for healing. Dr Sears, a renowned medical practitioner in North America, writes on diverse topics – here are some excerpts from his article on the uses of honey.

Ayurvedic practitioners in India have used honey for nearly 5,000 years.

Ayurveda is a holistic health system that evolved in ancient India. The term combines two Sanskrit words to mean “knowledge of life.” It’s the oldest system of medicine in the world. And it is still practiced widely in India, where the government recognizes it.

In the South Indian state of Kerala, he visited the original Ayurmana or “ancient healing house”, and watched the Ayurvedic masters use honey for nearly every skin treatment they created.

They mixed it with other natural ingredients like lemon, milk, rice and fruit juices to lighten freckles, cure skin rashes and acne, and remove wrinkles. Even Ayurvedic facial scrubs for everyday use have honey in them.

Honey, milk and oatmeal mixtures were also commonly used as facial beauty scrubs in ancient Egypt.

Dr Sears says even modern medicine is beginning to recognize honey’s benefits.

It is used mostly to heal wounds from burns and cuts, especially in New Zealand and Australia.

Scientists theorize honey helps skin because it encourages your skin to make hyaluronic acid (HA). HA fills out your skin because it absorbs 3,000 times its weight of water. At the same time, honey prevents the stringy kind of collagen that creates scar tissue from building up.

Instead, it forms a different type. A delicate, mesh-like collagen structure that can bring your skin’s surface back to normal and allow it to heal.

You can also use honey for other skin problems like diaper rash, haemorrhoids, psoriasis, eczema and dandruff.

And it’s antibacterial, too.

Honey works well against bacteria for two reasons. The first is that its sugars bind to water molecules and deny bacteria the moisture they need to grow.

The second is a secret ingredient added by bees. It’s an enzyme called glucose oxidase. Researchers think it stops bacteria effectively because it helps you produce hydrogen peroxide, a natural disinfectant.

Honey is deadly to the so-called “superbug” bacteria that cause hospital infections. A study took bacteria strains resistant to antibiotics and exposed them to dilutions of honey. Formulas of only 40 percent honey killed ALL the harmful bacteria.

Even the newest bacterial threat, gram-negative bacteria, can’t stand up to honey. The researchers used only a 30 percent dilution on the five known gram-negative strains and killed all of those, too.

And now plastic surgeons use honey to fix skin grafts in place and prevent complications, such as graft loss, infection and graft rejection.

Another reason honey is so good for your skin may be that it’s also an antioxidant.

Antioxidants protect skin from UV radiation damage, and aid in skin rejuvenation.

Darker honeys have high ORAC values. The ORAC scale was designed to help compare the antioxidant power of different foods. The higher the ORAC value of a food, the more power it has to stop free-radical damage and help fight off health problems.

Different kinds of grapes, for example, can have ORAC values of up to 1,200. But a study at the University of Illinois found that some of the darker honeys can measure as high as 1,630 on the ORAC scale, giving your skin’s health a big boost.

Scientists are even developing new alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) skin treatments from honey.

These acids from fruits and plants work with the slight acidity of your skin to help exfoliate it naturally. AHA helps remove old skin cells by dissolving the fatty deposits that hold them in place, which allows new healthy skin to emerge.

With all the ways your skin can benefit from honey, it’s a good idea to keep some in your house.

Dr Sears keeps a jar of raw, organic Manuka honey from New Zealand in his pantry, but any of the darker honeys are good for skin care.

If you get a cut or a scrape, you can follow these steps:

  • apply honey directly to the wound;
  • cover the wound with a bandage or dressing;
  • change the dressing and add more honey as necessary because the honey will diffuse into the wound;
  • change the bandage if it sticks to the wound instead of the honey.

To make an Ayurvedic exfoliant for your skin using honey, mix:

  • Two tablespoons of rice powder (or amla powder, if you can find it)
  • One tablespoon of milk (for dry skin, use plain yogurt instead)
  • Five drops of lemon juice (for oily skin)
  • One teaspoon of honey
  • One half teaspoon of sugar

Stir this mixture into a paste, apply it to your skin and leave on for up to 10 minutes. Rinse with fresh, clean water.

New study links Vitamin D deficiency to asthma & COPD

A mouse study out of Australia has provided the first concrete evidence of a link between vitamin D deficiency and decreased lung function. In fact, this study shows that vitamin D deficiency actually alters the very structure of the lungs, resulting in lower lung volume.

Although this was a mouse study, it follows right along with previous human studies showing a link between vitamin D deficiency and the severity of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD, one of the most common lung diseases, makes it difficult to breathe. This particular study was able to show a direct causal link between vitamin D deficiency and lung function. The results raised concerns about the increased prevalence of vitamin D deficiency.

Equally concerning is the misguided, way too low, vitamin D recommendations from the Institute of Medicine (see the February 2011 issue of Nutrition & Healing for Dr. Wright’s take on the IOM’s conclusions).

A new assay hitting Europe is able to determine early vitamin D deficiency by measuring blood levels of 25-hydroxy (25-OH) vitamin D. What’s so special about that? Vitamin D testing is known for being pretty inaccurate. Testing 25-OH vitamin D is the most accurate type of vitamin D test. Tech company Abbott, which developed the assay, says this means more opportunities for preventative and therapeutic action.

In the meantime, Dr. Wright has previously stated that sunlight is the very best source of vitamin D (the rays start a chain of reaction within the human body that results in the production of vitamin D). Of course, he also says that many don’t get enough sun these days, so supplementation is key. And, it’s Vitamin D3 that is essential.

Both Dr Wright and Dr Al Sears recommend 4,000 International Units of Vitamin D3 daily for adults and teens, 1,000 IU for infants and small children, and 2,000 IU for everyone in between. Of course, it’s always best to consult with a doctor skilled in natural medicine in determining proper supplement dosage.

Computers can cause eyestrain… so?? You must be wondering why we’re repeating something the whole world knows! Well, we do have a good reason…here is a very useful article that tells you more than you know on the subject of minimizing computer strain & what you can put into effect today to protect your eyesight. The article is by Orlin Sorensen, the inventor of the renowned Rebuild Your Vision Program.

Computer Vision 101: Simple Tips Your Eyes Will Appreciate

We’ve all heard of carpal tunnel syndrome, perhaps the most severe computer-related injury, but few are aware of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), the most common. The American Optometric Association defines CVS as the “complex of eye and vision problems related to near work that are experienced during or related to computer use.” Symptoms of CVS are eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision, and neck or shoulder pain.

Fortunately, making some basic changes to your computer work station can significantly improve the symptoms of CVS.

1) Monitor Madness

Repositioning your monitor is an easy and effective way to avoid awkward head or eye movements. It should be squarely in front of you at a distance of 18 to 28 inches, with the top of the monitor (not the screen) level with your eyes. You may also have to adjust the angle of your monitor to allow your eyes to remain in a natural position (straight ahead and slightly down). The ideal viewing angle is 10 to 20 degrees below your eye level. Remember, too, to place any copy you are working with at the same level as the screen; document holders that attach to the side of your monitor can be purchased at any office supply store.

2) Glare Care

Modifying your office lighting will eliminate glare and harsh reflections. First, find the source of the glare: is it coming from a window, task light, or the computer screen itself?

Adjust blinds or curtains to minimize sunlight. Turn down overhead lights so that the brightness of the screen and the surrounding room are balanced. Do not, however, work in the dark: the contrast between computer-generated light and lack of background light strains the eyes. Task lights should be positioned to provide direct light for reading and other office work but should not shine directly on the computer. Use a monitor glare screen or hood, change your monitor position, adjust your brightness/contrast controls, and use a larger text size, as display legibility is an important factor in visual performance. And get out those paper towels! A dusty, dirty screen can contribute to eye fatigue.

3) Take a Break

It’s easy to lose track of time at the computer. Take a break at least once an hour for about 10 minutes and blink frequently — video display use is associated with a decreased frequency of blinking. (And a computer break is a perfect excuse to perform your Rebuild Your Vision eye exercises.) Computer use can also cause an increased rate of tear evaporation. Relieve dry, itchy eyes with artificial tears from the drugstore or supermarket.

4) Special Needs

Seniors should take extra care arranging their work stations. The American Optometric Association notes that workers over 50 years of age require twice the light levels of young adults for comfortable work.

By the same token, very often small children share the same computer as their parents, a situation that can lead to injury, as monitor distance and position have been set up to accommodate the adults. Parents should also keep track of time spent at the computer — “parental control” applies as much to taking breaks as overseeing content!

Finally, be sure not to strain and squint to see your computer screen. This can lead to a multitude of problems including headaches, fatigue, dry-eyes, and prolonged vision problems.

As with any eye care issue, discuss computer-related vision problems with a qualified professional.

Eliminate wrinkles - very powerful technique

You must have seen people with deep grooves in their faces, and promised yourself that you’d never let your face look like a dried-up prune. Fortunately, we do have some control over the changing texture of our skin as it ages, even though we may not be able to completely put off the wrinkles and expression lines as they develop.

We’ve just came across a new stratagem that has proved very effective for some people in preventing wrinkles, although we have not tried it ourselves as yet (but intend to).

This involves applying fish oil directly to your wrinkles. This makes sense to us, as we all know that fish, especially those that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, are great for the heart as well as the brain. So why not for the skin too? However a word of caution, take care while applying near the eyes that none of it gets in the eye. Leave the fish oil on for about 20 minutes, then wash off the excess. Lastly, don’t apply any face cream or makeup on the area for at least 30 minutes or so.

Years will drop away from your face with regular application of fish oil on your wrinkles. But to hasten the process you must also do the facial exercises we’ve written about in a previous posting.  We repeat them here for your benefit to ensure you look your best before the festive season.

Back pain & hip-flexor muscles

Do you suffer from back pain? Chances are you do, even if only an irritating ‘heaviness’ around the lower back which occurs too consistently to ignore. Back pain has nothing to do with your age; more likely it has something to do with the number of hours you spend sitting on your behind. All the hours sitting behind your desk, in your car and in front of the television, may not seem long, but they can add up to six to eight hours a day in the seated position.

The bad news is that your body wasn’t designed to spend so much time sitting down. Long periods of sitting, exert enormous pressure on your hip flexors, and can be a major cause of lower-back pain.

Your hip-flexor muscles are the muscles at the front of your hips and pelvis. Stretching your hip-flexors several times a week can help prevent back pain. Here’s a simple stretch for the hip flexor muscles:

  • Start by standing up straight with both feet flat on the floor. Put your hands on your hips and keep your back and hips in alignment
  • Place your right foot forward, maintaining the same straight alignment
  • Push your hips forward, without actually bending the knees, while maintaining your erect posture. Push your hips forward slowly until you feel tension in the muscles on the front of your left hip. Hold till the count of 10
  • Repeat the sequence on the other side by reversing legs - putting your left foot forward to create tension in your right hip-flexors.

Simple, isn’t it? This is just one exercise that works to stretch the hip-flexors, but some people can do with a little extra help. It’s important to remember that back pain is often an issue with muscles and bones that aren’t in your back. Umami - the 5th taste

Yet another ‘fact’ that we grew up with has been turned on its head. We knew always, even as we snacked on toast generously slathered with Marmite, that there were four basic tastes - sweet, salty, sour and bitter. Recently a fifth taste has been identified- Umami – also found are specific receptors in the tongue to identify this special taste.

But what is this taste? Think Anchovies, Parmesan, rich broths, meaty mushrooms, Worcester Sauce… and Marmite. The full-bodied, glutamate-rich, satisfying taste that underlines each of these foods is umami, the fifth taste. In brief, umami equates to Savouriness!

Although newly discovered in the Western world, umami has been known in Asia over 100 years, since it was first identified by a Japanese scientist in seaweed, a local culinary staple.

Its discovery has opened up huge possibilities to the packaged-food trade. Recipes can integrate umami-rich ingredients to reduce the fat and salt content of foods without sacrificing flavor. In homes too, cooks well-versed in umami can boost flavor by adding ingredients rich in glutamate. Flavor-enhancing ingredients found in most refrigerators and kitchen cupboards are Parmesan and other aged cheeses; soy sauce; tomato juice, paste or ketchup; Worcester sauce, Anchovy and Thai fish pastes, meat extracts and mushrooms.

And, since we are on the subject of sauces, let me share a recipe for Worcester sauce we came across in an antique cook-book we have in our library:

Recipe for Home-Made Worcester sauce

Ingredients: 4 shallots; 1 quart brown vinegar; 6 tbsp walnut ketchup; 5 tbsp anchovy essence; 4 tbsp soya sauce; ½ tsp cayenne pepper; salt to taste.

Method: Chop shallots very finely. Put all ingredients, including shallots, into a large bottle and cork it closely. Shake well 3 or 4 times daily for 14 days. Then strain the sauce into small bottles and cork tightly. Store bottles in a cool, dry place.
