Eye exercise to iron out under-eye wrinkles

Protecting the eyes from acquiring under-eye wrinkles comes high on the priority list during summers. Direct exposure to the sun’s rays is a prime cause. No doubt, the sun is beneficial in small doses. In fact, looking into the early morning sun for half a minute is a yoga practice to improve eye sight. But note the words ‘early morning’ and ‘half a minute’. Beyond that, make sure you have a good pair of sun goggles to protect the eyes.

Here is an eye exercise to iron out the tiny under-eye wrinkles:

Position yourself in front of a mirror, and look straight into it while doing this eye exercise.

Place the index fingers of your hands along the tops of your eye sockets just under the eyebrows.
Close your eyes and lift your eyebrows upwards, simultaneously pressing back with your fingers against the bone.
Hold this position while you stretch the upper lids downwards. Use short pulsing movements to maximize the stretch.
Hold lids shut to a count of 10. Release slowly, open lids and release eyebrows.

This eye exercise should be done daily; mornings and evenings for maximum benefit.

Short cut to beautiful hair -a recipe for dry shampoo

So here is the recipe for dry shampoo you can make yourself. Whisk together corn-starch with half its quantity of baking soda, e.g. 1 cup corn-starch and 1/2 cup baking soda. Stored in an air-tight container you can use this dry shampoo for months, as required.

Rub the powder into your hair and scalp and brush out the excess. (Place a towel over your shoulders to protect your clothes from the powdery substance). You’ll have fresh, bouncy beautiful hair each time – the better to frame your face with.

Facial exercises for jaw line contouring

The whole face is a network of muscles, so the most effective way to look younger and more vibrant is to give the face a good work-out with massage and facial exercises.

For a unique natural radiance that cannot be achieved by cosmetics, massage your face everyday. Apply a few drops of a good facial oil, like sandal, jojoba or grape-seed to a damp face and massage in for a minute or two to rev up the circulation in the entire face. Coconut oil is good for lightening the skin.

While massaging, focus on the areas most vulnerable to the downward pull of the forces of gravity… the jaw, the throat and cheek areas. You need to build up these areas through massage and facial exercise.

I’m outlining an exercise that has a miraculous effect on the jawline. However for a similar effect on the whole face you’d have to do the more comprehensive system of facial exercises.

Here is one move for the jaw-line, based on isometrics. Ball your fingers into fists and position so that your chin and jaw area rests squarely on both fists. Your chin should be positioned on one of your knuckles. Press down hard with your chin while you press upwards with your balled fists. Hold this position for a count of ten. Repeat five times.

You can repeat this exercise as often as you like; whenever and wherever….. without attracting curious glances. I’ve done it waiting in a queue, while walking, waiting for the traffic lights to change or watching a favorite TV series. Try replacing nail-biting with jaw contouring while watching ‘The Firm’

How to do a breast self exam

An extremely lucid guide on how to conduct a breast self exam caught our eye as we waited at the AMRI Hospitals’ visitors’ lounge. We are sharing this invaluable information with our readers, giving due credit to the source, i.e AMRI Hospitals, Kolkata.

Preparing for the breast self exam:
* To be conducted once a month on a fixed day of the month (if of non menstrual age), or  a few days after menstrual cycle.
*  Examination should be done very soon after a bath

Conducting the visual breast self exam:
* Remove all clothing from the chest area
* Stand in front of mirror
* Look for changes in breast  skin texture: any puckering, dimpling, or change in size, shape, symmetry, skin discoloration, bumps, sores, scaly skin?
* Check the nipples: are they turned in (inverted)? Is there any discharge?
* Examine the breasts, as above, with both hands placed on hips.
* Inspect them again with arms raised overhead.

Conducting the manual/tactile breast self exam:
* Lie on a flat surface & place a pillow under your left shoulder. Place the left hand behind your head. This posture is suitable for examination of the left breast with your right hand. The position of the pillow and hand must be reversed for examination of the right breast with your left hand.
* Place your hand at the very top of your breast, near the collarbone.
* Mentally divide the breast into 8 segments (like spokes of a wheel, converging at the nipple)
* Apply firm pressure using the pads of the middle three fingers on each segment of the breast. The pressure can move from the top of the breast segment to the nipple or rotate around the nipple.
* Conduct the pressure test on each breast in turn.
* Examine the upper chest area above the breasts
* Examine the arm pits while sitting or standing with the arm partially raised
* Examine the nipples and look for discharge by positioning the fingers above and below the nipple, then on both sides, to distend the area around the nipples for easier viewing

Breast cancer is a killer. Conduct this self exam once a month to make sure you catch it at the earliest stage, when it is curable.

Ayurvedic practitioners in India have used honey for nearly 5,000 years.

Ayurveda is a holistic health system that evolved in ancient India. The term combines two Sanskrit words to mean “knowledge of life.” It’s the oldest system of medicine in the world. And it is still practiced widely in India, where the government recognizes it.

In the South Indian state of Kerala, he visited the original Ayurmana or “ancient healing house”, and watched the Ayurvedic masters use honey for nearly every skin treatment they created.

They mixed it with other natural ingredients like lemon, milk, rice and fruit juices to lighten freckles, cure skin rashes and acne, and remove wrinkles. Even Ayurvedic facial scrubs for everyday use have honey in them.

Honey, milk and oatmeal mixtures were also commonly used as facial beauty scrubs in ancient Egypt.

Dr Sears says even modern medicine is beginning to recognize honey’s benefits.

It is used mostly to heal wounds from burns and cuts, especially in New Zealand and Australia.

Scientists theorize honey helps skin because it encourages your skin to make hyaluronic acid (HA). HA fills out your skin because it absorbs 3,000 times its weight of water. At the same time, honey prevents the stringy kind of collagen that creates scar tissue from building up.

Instead, it forms a different type. A delicate, mesh-like collagen structure that can bring your skin’s surface back to normal and allow it to heal.

You can also use honey for other skin problems like diaper rash, haemorrhoids, psoriasis, eczema and dandruff.

And it’s antibacterial, too.

Honey works well against bacteria for two reasons. The first is that its sugars bind to water molecules and deny bacteria the moisture they need to grow.

The second is a secret ingredient added by bees. It’s an enzyme called glucose oxidase. Researchers think it stops bacteria effectively because it helps you produce hydrogen peroxide, a natural disinfectant.

Honey is deadly to the so-called “superbug” bacteria that cause hospital infections. A study took bacteria strains resistant to antibiotics and exposed them to dilutions of honey. Formulas of only 40 percent honey killed ALL the harmful bacteria.

Even the newest bacterial threat, gram-negative bacteria, can’t stand up to honey. The researchers used only a 30 percent dilution on the five known gram-negative strains and killed all of those, too.

And now plastic surgeons use honey to fix skin grafts in place and prevent complications, such as graft loss, infection and graft rejection.

Another reason honey is so good for your skin may be that it’s also an antioxidant.

Antioxidants protect skin from UV radiation damage, and aid in skin rejuvenation.

Darker honeys have high ORAC values. The ORAC scale was designed to help compare the antioxidant power of different foods. The higher the ORAC value of a food, the more power it has to stop free-radical damage and help fight off health problems.

Different kinds of grapes, for example, can have ORAC values of up to 1,200. But a study at the University of Illinois found that some of the darker honeys can measure as high as 1,630 on the ORAC scale, giving your skin’s health a big boost.

Scientists are even developing new alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) skin treatments from honey.

These acids from fruits and plants work with the slight acidity of your skin to help exfoliate it naturally. AHA helps remove old skin cells by dissolving the fatty deposits that hold them in place, which allows new healthy skin to emerge.

With all the ways your skin can benefit from honey, it’s a good idea to keep some in your house.

Dr Sears keeps a jar of raw, organic Manuka honey from New Zealand in his pantry, but any of the darker honeys are good for skin care.

If you get a cut or a scrape, you can follow these steps:

  • apply honey directly to the wound;
  • cover the wound with a bandage or dressing;
  • change the dressing and add more honey as necessary because the honey will diffuse into the wound;
  • change the bandage if it sticks to the wound instead of the honey.

To make an Ayurvedic exfoliant for your skin using honey, mix:

  • Two tablespoons of rice powder (or amla powder, if you can find it)
  • One tablespoon of milk (for dry skin, use plain yogurt instead)
  • Five drops of lemon juice (for oily skin)
  • One teaspoon of honey
  • One half teaspoon of sugar

Stir this mixture into a paste, apply it to your skin and leave on for up to 10 minutes. Rinse with fresh, clean water.

New study links Vitamin D deficiency to asthma & COPD

A mouse study out of Australia has provided the first concrete evidence of a link between vitamin D deficiency and decreased lung function. In fact, this study shows that vitamin D deficiency actually alters the very structure of the lungs, resulting in lower lung volume.

Although this was a mouse study, it follows right along with previous human studies showing a link between vitamin D deficiency and the severity of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD, one of the most common lung diseases, makes it difficult to breathe. This particular study was able to show a direct causal link between vitamin D deficiency and lung function. The results raised concerns about the increased prevalence of vitamin D deficiency.

Equally concerning is the misguided, way too low, vitamin D recommendations from the Institute of Medicine (see the February 2011 issue of Nutrition & Healing for Dr. Wright’s take on the IOM’s conclusions).

A new assay hitting Europe is able to determine early vitamin D deficiency by measuring blood levels of 25-hydroxy (25-OH) vitamin D. What’s so special about that? Vitamin D testing is known for being pretty inaccurate. Testing 25-OH vitamin D is the most accurate type of vitamin D test. Tech company Abbott, which developed the assay, says this means more opportunities for preventative and therapeutic action.

In the meantime, Dr. Wright has previously stated that sunlight is the very best source of vitamin D (the rays start a chain of reaction within the human body that results in the production of vitamin D). Of course, he also says that many don’t get enough sun these days, so supplementation is key. And, it’s Vitamin D3 that is essential.

Both Dr Wright and Dr Al Sears recommend 4,000 International Units of Vitamin D3 daily for adults and teens, 1,000 IU for infants and small children, and 2,000 IU for everyone in between. Of course, it’s always best to consult with a doctor skilled in natural medicine in determining proper supplement dosage.

Eliminate wrinkles - very powerful technique

You must have seen people with deep grooves in their faces, and promised yourself that you’d never let your face look like a dried-up prune. Fortunately, we do have some control over the changing texture of our skin as it ages, even though we may not be able to completely put off the wrinkles and expression lines as they develop.

We’ve just came across a new stratagem that has proved very effective for some people in preventing wrinkles, although we have not tried it ourselves as yet (but intend to).

This involves applying fish oil directly to your wrinkles. This makes sense to us, as we all know that fish, especially those that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, are great for the heart as well as the brain. So why not for the skin too? However a word of caution, take care while applying near the eyes that none of it gets in the eye. Leave the fish oil on for about 20 minutes, then wash off the excess. Lastly, don’t apply any face cream or makeup on the area for at least 30 minutes or so.

Years will drop away from your face with regular application of fish oil on your wrinkles. But to hasten the process you must also do the facial exercises we’ve written about in a previous posting.  We repeat them here for your benefit to ensure you look your best before the festive season.

Macular Degeneration & Vitamin B

One of our greatest fears as we get older is about the condition of the eyes. How long can we sustain our vision?

Few treatments exist for a condition that is likely to affect as many as 10 million plus seniors in North America – age-related macular degeneration. And, even more worrying is the fact that such treatment is available only for the advanced forms of the condition.

Under the circumstances, some hope for prevention of onset of macular degeneration is offered by the results of a study funded by the National Eye Institute. One of the findings of this study is that high blood levels of the amino acid, homocysteine, may contribute to age-related macular degeneration. In addition, the report also mentions the possible benefit from taking folic acid, vitamins B-6 and B-12. These vitamins are known to reduce blood levels of homocysteine.

Most reports are circumspect when reporting their findings and far from free with their recommendations. But reading between the lines one can safely deduce (without being Sherlock Holmes) that upping your daily dose of Vitamin B complex may be one route to putting off the onset of macular degeneration as long as possible.

Of all the senses, eyesight is one of the most precious – do everything possible to ensure better vision naturally, as long as is possible.

What is Smilorexia

Achieving the absolute perfect smile may seem like a harmless preoccupation, but the condition has been termed an obssessive, compulsive disorder termed ‘Smilorexia’. I have to confess, the first time I heard the term I did smile very broadly! But jokes apart, if you spend hours agonizing about how to achieve the dentistry that could rival a red-carpet celebrity’s, its possible that you have been afflicted with ’smilorexia’.

Thinking of going in for cosmetic dentistry just so you can flash your pearlies at all and sundry, and even when you’d rather be scowling? You have smilorexia without doubt. But, a small suggestion here - why think about such extreme solutions as recaps, transplants etc? Try tooth soap first. Consider cosmetic dentistry only if tooth soap does not work for you.  I haven’t , till date, been disappointed with the whitening and gum strengthening effects of tooth soap, but then I’m realistic enough not to aspire to Farah Fawcett’s smile. And I don’t seem to have smilorexia.

Good deal… here’s 5 tips that will help you along…

TIP 1

Ditch The Starch

Starches, such as rice, potatoes, some root vegetables, oats, etc. are often considered “health foods.”

While they can be healthy, they can also pack on stomach bodyfat if you eat too much of them.

As you may know, my “Every Other Day Diet” System (EODD) actually encourages you to eat starches, and even sweets,

several days a week TO GET RID of excess weight.

Weight Loss

Well… how does THAT work?

Simple:  Timing is everything.

And we take a “weekly” approach to foods rather than a “daily approach”. This keeps your metabolism guessing. If

your body cannot figure out what you’re up to, fatburning is that much more powerful. And you can get by with

eating starches… at least at specific times on specific days.

But if you’re not going to do EODD, then you’ll have to wing it. And the best way to wing it is to simply cut

starches out entirely for 4 to 8 weeks. Then slowly add them back a few days per week.

This is nowhere near as effective (or as fun) as the EODD method, but it will get you pointed in the right

direction.

TIP 2

Can The Sodas

This one is really hard for me. I’ve been hooked on diet-soda on and off for years. When I go to get into top shape

(like I am now) I have to get rid of the diet-sodas… yes, DIET-sodas. Need I say “real” sodas too? They are

loaded with sugar.

Why diet-sodas? A recent study revealed that people who drank diet-sodas actually increased bodyfat when compared

to those who drank sugar-sodas. What the… ??

Yep. Your body cannot be fooled by aspartame and chemicals. Sorry, but that’s the truth.

Here’s a personal story:  When I cut out the diet-sodas, my bodyfat drops like a rock in a pond of clear water.

And that’s what you need to be drinking:  A quart of pure water per 50 lbs of bodyweight a day.

I mix it with lemon and a bit of Stevia (an herbal sweetener) and make lemonade. It’s wonderful!

TIP 3

Stay Hungry

Arnold’s first movie was “Stay Hungry” (well, after “Pumping Iron” that is). You cannot rest on your butt and stay

hungry. You cannot think you’ve “arrived” and stay hungry.

It takes a special person to be hungry… and an even greater one to stay that way.

I want you to stay hungry in two ways:  In how you workout and literally… stay a bit hungry before you go to bed.

Not “starving”… just a bit hungry.

For your workouts, I have a great solution. If you pick up EODD you’ll get a limited shot at “7 Minute Body”… my

combination of “7 Minute Muscle” and “The 7 Minute In-Home Workout” in one book… and for more than half off…

but that’s a very limited deal. Gotta have EODD… you’ll need them both…

Lose Weight

You see, progression — “forced” progression — is the best way to stay hungry. 7 Minute Body forces you to

progress without thinking about it. Progression is built into the System.

As for as staying hungry at night? Check with your doctor and if he/she okays it, take 500mg of potassium and

1000mg of magnesium/calcium a few hours prior to bed. This helps with the hunger pangs. Also, keep hard-boiled eggs

in the fridge. If you get really hungry, eat one with half the yolk (toss the other half) It keeps me full for an

hour at least.

TIP 4

Cardio Clarity

Hours and hours of cardio a day is not the answer. However, you can do “light” cardio (i.e. brisk walking, or

riding the bike at 60% of your max) just to burn off calories. That’s okay… and personally I don’t find it that

boring if I’m watching a TV show. It does not interfere with my main fatloss exercise (weight training… YES!) and

it burns off about 400 calories an hour.

What does work is early morning fasting cardio… but you only need 9-15 minutes. I explain the GXP Protocol

TIP 5

Get Raw At Night

Raw veggies with your last meal and as a snack will really help your fatburning along. I started with red peppers

because they’re sweet. Now I eat virtually every veggie raw at night without thinking about it. Give this a shot.

Firm up sagging chin and neck

I recently saw an ad on TV that was marketing a curious device.

The claim was it would tone the neck and firm up the chin.

The cost was around $20 + S&H.

I knew immediately that it would work!

How so?

Well, it was spring-loaded to offer resistance, so it used the principle of isometrics, which is very effective.

If you’re a baby boomer, you’ll remember Charles Atlas with his perfectly sculpted body. He used isometrics (without devices).

You can do the same for your neck and chin using this improvisation on the $20 device- at no cost!

Try this extremely fast-working exercise:

Tilt your chin up as far as it will comfortably go (as though you’re looking at a fly on the ceiling). Clench your left fist and place it under your chin.

Now push down with your chin while resisting with your fist, until your chin touches your collarbone. Then push your chin back up to its original upward tilting position, resisting against the pressure.

Repeat with your right fist.

Don’t strain yourself - you can increase the resistance as your neck strengthens over the weeks.

Two repetitions with each fist is enough at first. You will see excellent results literally within days!

Banish dark circles & under-eye puffiness

Under-eye circles and puffiness look ugly and can mar even the most youthful and perfect face. Unfortunately, the under eye area is very vulnerable to aging as the skin under the eyes is thin and delicate.

As you age, the fat pad under the eyes thins out causing the skin to bag and the under-eye blood vessels to become more noticeable. Factors such as lack of sleep (or too much), dehydration (or fluid retention), poor diet, hay fever and allergies, certain medications (and certain medical conditions) - or even your genetics - can cause the problem.

The following steps could help reduce these dark patches.

Sleep is a must - 7/8 hours are essential. Drink enough water and make sure your diet includes generous helpings of green vegetables.

A yoga asana - ‘the inversion pose’ can be extremely helpful if you’re supple enough or a yoga practitioner. Alternatively, try lying down on the floor and raising your legs at right angles to your body. It’s okay to use the wall or any vertical support to prop your legs up at right angles. Hold this pose for a few minutes, breathing normally. Start with half a minute and build up to three.

There are also some commercial formulas that are known to be effective. Moisturizing emollients and natural ingredients help counter moisture loss and the appearance of skin pigmentation -the characteristics of dark under-eye circles.

Direct application of cucumber juice can also work in the long term. Grate raw cucumber without peeling and apply the extracted juice on the dark or puffy under-eye area. Wash off after 15 minutes.
