Periodontal Gum Disease May Lead to Tongue Cancer

Posted by youngaga On May - 27 - 2007Comments Off

The red and white lesions on the tongue may not always be painful causing those afflicted to procrastinate on taking medical opinion. The fact that these lesions, symptomatic of tongue cancer, never heal, is what drives most people to the doctor. As a result, tongue cancer is normally diagnosed at a stage when it’s too late to do much about it.

Now, according to media reports, researchers have identified a possible link between long-standing periodontal disease (gum disease) and tongue cancer. So anyone with periodontal or gum disease should be cautious, and take preventative action.

A chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and the alveolar bone that supports the teeth, Peridontal disease sets in when the bacteria in dental plaque, the sticky coating that forms on unclean or badly cleaned teeth, causes the gums to become inflamed. Peridontal disease leads to bone loss in the alveolar bone – the bone in the jaw that holds the teeth in place.

Researchers at the University of Buffalo and Roswell Park Cancer Institute studying the connection between gum disease and cancer over a period of 6 years, have found that the risk of tongue cancer increased 5-fold with every millimeter of lost alveolar bone. Over time, bacteria, and the toxins and enzymes they produce, cause genetic alterations in specific tongue cells, which turn cancerous.

Dr. Mine Tezal, of the University of Buffalo, the lead author of the study, has been quoted as saying that only proper dental hygiene can prevent or arrest inflammation. So it would be prudent to treat any form of gum disease as a warning signal – and take precautions to arrest further alveolar bone loss. The most effective way of preventing gum disease is to keep your teeth clean. In our experience, the most effective teeth and mouth cleaner is an all natural product specially created for A-1 dental hygiene

New Food Guide in Canada

Posted by youngaga On May - 24 - 2007Comments Off
Canada’s first food guide to be released in 15 years, is packed with good advice & it’s contemporary too!
It incorporates tips for healthy eating, such as, ” You can choose half servings..”, and “…healthy eating habits may help reduce your risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain types of cancer, and osteoporosis….”! Not only that, it includes food choices that reflect the varied palettes of Canada’s multi-cultural population.
Foods are grouped into four catagories - meat & alternatives, milk & alternatives, grain products, vegetables & fruits - and the guide indicates serving sizes in each category, based on age and gender.
Under the category of meat products, the new Food Guide recommends at least two servings of fish weekly. Fish is much healthier than red meat as it has many healthy Omega fatty acids. The guide also suggests eating more meat alternatives such as lentils and tofu, eating more lean meats and avoiding cholesterol-rich foods.

There is also a small section on the last page advising limited intake of foods high in calories, fat, sugar or salt. And a list of ‘banned’ items (which lists almost every junk food, including soft drinks).

Drinking water gets a definite thumbs up!

In addition, the new edition (the previous one was published in 1992) offers dietary tips for children, pregnant women and the 50 plus segment, although the only cogent advice for the older section of the population (those over 50 years and above) is to take Vitamin D daily. Children are advised to increase calorie intake.

The rest of the food guide offers advice on how to regulate food servings, how to build up more time for exercising and how to properly read labels for fat and trans-fat content.

In other words, it re-inforces what any health-conscious person knows - that food & nutrition is of the utmost importance in managing one’s health, that proper diet can help fight ailments as diverse as obesity and cataracts.
In fact, today we are fortunate to also have Nutraceuticals that can help us in our quest for good health
