There is an extensive scam being perpetrated all over the USA and Canada, which involves long-distance telephone charges.
You may get a call saying a family member is in trouble and to immediately call a particular number (with a prefix of one of the 3 above codes). Or that you have won a prize, or that ……, well, you get the picture!
Be sure to check with the operator before you call. They appear, at first glance to be US telephone numbers, but they are actually in The Bahamas. They will try to extend the call as long as possible, or you’ll get a long recording.
You will be shocked when you get your next telephone bill. And, the worst part is, your hands are tied because YOU made the call.
Your local telephone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved. They will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. So, you’ll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.
